The Transport Systems Research Laboratory (TSRL) is a cross-sectoral, multi-disciplinary facility that has been established within the School of Engineering Sciences at the University of Southampton. In conjunction with the adjacent Materials and Structures Laboratories, the TSRL provides a major regional and national centre for mechanics research with the primary objective of fostering scholarship and scientific enquiry into the behaviour of materials and structures. Work carried out in the laboratory addresses microstructure-property relationships, material-structure synthesis, design-production coupling and fluid-structure interactions.

Experimental capabilities range from fundamental materials testing through to the analysis of whole engineering structures. Emphasis is placed on performance under service conditions, including in-service loading spectra, temperatures and chemical environments. Test requirements specific to the marine, automotive, aerospace, construction and biomedical engineering sectors are met. The facilities are fully integrated into the computational modelling, design, manufacturing and materials analysis facilities within the School of Engineering Sciences.
